Dr. Khodadoost Ophthalmology Hospital, located in Fars province, Shiraz city, is a private and medical hospital with a capacity of 32 fixed beds, which was established in 1373. Dr. Ali Asghar Khodadoost is the founder of this hospital.

Ali Asghar Khodadoost (born on 4 December 1314 – died on 19 March 2016) was an Iranian ophthalmologist and a professor at American universities. Corneal problems were evident. He is known as the father of ophthalmology and the founder of cornea transplant in Iran.

Dr. Ali Asghar Khodadoost completed his elementary and high school in Shiraz and worked as a teacher in Davari Darab Elementary School. In 1333, he participated in the entrance exam of Shiraz Medical School and was accepted among the candidates with an honors degree and started studying in this school. He passed the six-year medical course with honors and after one year of ophthalmology residency at Shiraz University’s Namazi Hospital in 1341, he was selected by the government to complete a specialized course in the United States.

Before founding Dr. Khodadoost Ophthalmology Hospital, Professor Khodadoost was accepted as the first and only foreign assistant in the ophthalmology department of Johns Hopkins University in 1341 and was recognized as the best assistant in Wilmer Ophthalmology Center during his three-year residency. During this period, in addition to studying clinical sciences, he was actively engaged in research in basic sciences and published many articles in various magazines.
After the end of his career, he worked for one year as a trainer and one year as an assistant professor in the ophthalmology department of the same university, and in 1347, despite the offer and request of John Hopkins University, he went to Iran and worked as a professor in the ophthalmology department of Shiraz University.
One year after his arrival in Shiraz, the head of the ophthalmology department of Johns Hopkins University came to Shiraz and an assistant exchange agreement was signed between the ophthalmology departments of these two universities. Every year one of the assistants of Shiraz ophthalmology department was sent to Johns Hopkins University to learn basic knowledge and every year four assistants came to Shiraz alternately from the mentioned university to learn clinical knowledge and practical experience and experience in surgery.
This 10-year program was one of the most effective programs to keep the level of education and helping to found Dr. Khodadoost Ophthalmology Hospital , research and treatment high in Shiraz University, especially the eye department.
From 1347 to 1359, he spent six months every two years as a visiting professor in the eye department of Johns Hopkins University to continue research programs. Peru, Ecuador and Italy were called. Khodadoost went to America in 1359 and worked as a professor in the eye department of Johns Hopkins University.
In 1361, he was elected as a professor and head of the Ophthalmology Department of Sicily University, and in 1371, he founded the Connecticut Ophthalmology Center in New Haven and worked as its supervisor. Since 1359, he has returned to Iran twice a year and participated in clinical and educational activities in various hospitals in Tehran and Shiraz, yet the Dr. Khodadoost Ophthalmology Hospital was not founded.
Aside from Dr. Khodadoost Ophthalmology Hospital, Dr. Khodadoost’s super-specialized an eye hospital in Shiraz and founded Sarein eye hospital in Ardabil province are among his activities in Iran.

He has been alternately introduced by prominent figures in American ophthalmology as the best corneal transplant surgeon in the world, and his fame is due to his basic research on corneal surface disorders, in addition to numerous scientific articles and extensive research in various fields and the quality of treatment and experience in surgical treatment. which in cornea transplants on graft rejection mechanism is named “Khodadoust line” in his honor.
