Breast augmentation
Breast augmentation is surgery to increase breast size. It’s also called augmentation mammoplasty. It involves placing breast implants under breast tissue or chest muscles.
For some people, this augmentation is a way to feel better about themselves. For others, it’s part of rebuilding a breast for various conditions.
If you’re thinking of having breast augmentation, talk with a plastic surgeon. Make sure you know what the surgery involves, including possible risks and complications, as well as how to take care of yourself after surgery.
Breast Lift
A breast lift is a surgical procedure performed by a plastic surgeon to change the shape of the breasts. During the procedure a plastic surgeon removes excess skin and reshapes breast tissue to raise the breasts. This lift is also known as mastopexy.
You might choose to have a breast lift if your breasts sag or your nipples point downward. This lift might also boost your self-image and self-confidence.
This procedure won’t change the size of your breasts. However, the procedure can be done with breast augmentation or breast reduction.
Buttock lift
A buttock lift is a cosmetic surgery to improve the appearance of the buttocks. It may be done as part of a tummy tuck. Or it may be done as part of a lower body lift to contour the buttocks, groin, thighs and abdomen.
During the procedure, excess skin and fat are removed from the buttocks. The remaining skin is then repositioned to create a more toned look.
A buttock lift alone won’t add volume to the buttocks. But sometimes this lift is combined with an augmentation. An augmentation alters the shape or size of the buttocks with implants or fat taken from other parts of the body.
Chin, cheek, or jaw reshaping
Plastic surgery to change the shape of the chin, cheek, or jaw may be done. This procedure is typically done to enhance certain facial features, or to bring a certain aspect of the face into proportion with the rest of the face. It may also be done to address a defect present since birth, or as a result of an injury.
For the reshaping of the chin, cheek, or jaw, the surgeon may insert an implant into the area to redefine its appearance.
Possible complications of facial implants may include:
- Infection. As with any operation, an infection can occur. If this happens, you will be given antibiotics to clear up the infection. If the infection does not resolve, then the implant may have to be temporarily removed and replaced at a later time.
- Shifting. A facial implant could move slightly out of alignment. You may need a second operation to put the implant in its correct place.
- Scarring and swelling
- Changes in skin sensation and color
- Persistent pain
Dermabrasion and Dermaplaning
What is dermabrasion?
Similar to a chemical peel, dermabrasion is a procedure that resurfaces your skin and removes fine wrinkles and minimizes scars on the skin. The difference between a chemical peel and dermabrasion, however, is the method used. Dermabrasion involves the surgeon using a high speed rotating brush to manually remove the top layer of skin. The size and depth of the scars, as well as the degree of wrinkling, determine the appropriate level of skin that will be surgically sloughed.
Possible complications of dermabrasion may include:
- Fever blisters. Dermabrasion can cause fever blisters to reappear in those who are prone to frequent herpes simplex infections. Antiviral medicines are often used to treat this symptom. You may be given them before your treatment.
- Pigmentation changes. Some people may develop a change in the pigmentation (coloration) of their skin after undergoing the procedure. Treatment for this symptom may include the use of bleaching creams, as prescribed by a doctor. A decrease in pigmentation can be permanent.
- Thickened skin. Thickening of the skin can develop. This symptom may be treated with cortisone creams or injections which help the skin return to its normal state.
